Elkridge, MD is the oldest settlement in Howard County. It was founded in 1733 as Jansen Town. Its current name, Elkridge, with the modern spelling, was not bestowed until 1895. Today, Elkridge is an unincorporated community. It is also a census-designated location.As of the 2020 census, the population of Elkridge was over 25,000 people.

Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department – The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department began in 1942 at which time America was at war with Germany and Japan. Stories of the war were provided by radio. At that time, the threat of enemy air raid attacks in an area such as Elkridge were very real because of Elkridge being so close to industrial Baltimore and the nation’s capital. If an attack would occur, Elkridge would have to rely on the services of other area fire department’s services.
